A
number of our members, including myself, understand that
the problem of airplane sound pollution needs to be addressed by the
aviation
community.
I
see a way in which our groups might cooperate to effect to change the
situation.
My
idea has two parts,
The
first part of the idea is a Website where the public can log noise
complaints,
which would be displayed on a map of the area, along with "fly
friendly" suggestions
for changing the sound picture . This map would be periodically
distributed to area pilots. The existence of the site would be a
resource
for Plane Sense, the police
and other public officials confronted with aircraft noise complaints.
The
second part of the idea is to use the Website as the
core of a publicity campaign. I believe the best way to reach
groups
which you and I find unresponsive
(the East Coast Aero Club and Stop The Noise, to name two)
is to
offer reasonable ideas which make their extreme positions look
foolish.
Many
people and organizations (Senators, Kennedy & Meehan, The Selectman
of
Groton, The FAA, AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the
EAA
(Experimental Aircraft Association) ) have all been involved in
this
issue. They would all like to publicly endorse and support a
concrete
solution to the issue of aircraft noise.
I believe we could use Peter's group, NEFSA, as
a neutral
body which could develop the Website with input from Plane Sense and
Chapter
35. Peter's connections
to AOPA and EAA could result in publicity (and legitimacy) in the
pilot
community. AOPA routinely e-mails pilots in the region regarding
airspace
issues
(TFR's especially). They might be persuaded to distribute
the noise
map as well.
